Meet Laura
Laura McKaig, Owner
Pelvic Floor Therapy Specialist, Educator
I understand how frustrating and embarrassing these problems can be. I suffered for years from pelvic disorders that I now know are very treatable with physical therapy. I founded my pelvic floor specialty clinic because I want to help you find the hope for recovery that took me so long to discover.
It's especially important to me to educate and empower you with the knowledge and skills you need to regain your dignity, restore your bladder, bowel, or sexual function, and improve your quality of life.

I've spent years working with people whose lives are severely affected by pain or dysfunction. After earning a Master's degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Kansas Medical Center, I practiced in numerous settings and with all adult age groups. Those experiences motivated me to attain Master Clinician status for pelvic dysfunction with SAVA Senior Care, as well as create one of the first pelvic health programs in the area for long-term care residents. To date, I have acquired over 300 hours of advanced training in assessing and treating male and female pelvic floor disorders.

In addition to being a clinician, I’m
also an educator and an advocate for
pelvic health. I conduct seminars, in-services, and educational classes for fitness and healthcare professionals as well as for the public.
I look forward to listening to and addressing your concerns in the most compassionate and sensitive manner.
What Is the Pelvic Floor ?
Your pelvic floor consists of over 20 muscles as well as ligaments and fascia tissue; it forms a sort of hammock or “floor”, from the pubic bone to the tailbone, and in between each "sit" bone. This structure helps to support your urinary and reproductive organs. It's also responsible for controlling your bladder and bowels.
When the pelvic floor structures become weakened, too tight, or are not working correctly, it could lead to problems with bowel or bladder function, sexual function, or pain. Such problems are often given the general label of “pelvic floor dysfunction”.
Pelvic floor therapy is an approach that can address these problems through movement, muscle retraining, exercise, and lifestyle modifications, to name just a few. It can be an excellent treatment alternative to surgery or medication.

What Can I Expect from My Treatment Sessions?
Afraid of what you’ve heard about pelvic floor therapy? Have you tried pelvic floor therapy before and it didn’t work? Maybe it’s time for a New Approach.
The Pelvic Connection approach to pelvic floor therapy involves more than just Kegels or passive biofeedback. Our approach is both compassionate and sensitive -- we know how emotional this can be. All in all, it's probably a bit (or a lot!) different than what you may have experienced in the past.
Our Approach:

• Creating a safe, soothing, discreet experience
• Offering a treatment area that is warm,
relaxed, and private. Never clinical or cold.
• Spending as much time as it takes to get to
know you before we treat you. Your medical
history is just the start. We want to hear how
your problem is affecting your life, and what
you hope to achieve through treatment.
• Giving you a professional and safe space to
process, discover, recover, and heal.
• Taking time to explore and understand the
WHY behind your pain, leakage, or other
symptoms -- and not just assuming it's
simply a result of pelvic floor weakness.

• Ensuring that every exercise we teach you has
a purpose. We'll never waste your time.
We want to keep you motivated and
headed toward success always.

Pelvic Connection takes a true "whole body approach" to getting to the root of your issues.Remember, everything in your body is connected somehow, so there may be multiple causes to address. We will work to get to the bottom of it -- and also help you understand it so you can be a partner in your healing.
We believe knowledge is power when it comes to healing.
Yes, we encourage you to be curious! We love it when you ask questions, and we want to educate you about your anatomy and especially the “unseen” structures in your body and how they should work. In that way, you can be more aware of how your movements affect your pelvic floor in ways that help (or hurt).

We believe you can and should play an active role in your treatment.
Quick fixes don't last; behavioral changes and awareness do. While you may see some improvements early on, the long-lasting results take time, and your motivation and participation, along with the knowledge gained, will make all the difference!
